There’s no substitute for the character possessed by a true original. Which is why Herat journeys to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India to seek out gorgeous rugs and textiles. Working with locally sourced wool, cotton, silk and jute, everything is woven by hand, and colored with vegetable dyes. In Afghanistan in particular, the art has been practiced for centuries in small, rural villages, with girls learning directly from their mothers. A large rug can take months to complete, so many can only produce one piece a year. The work is primarily done during the winter when agriculture is at a standstill. The looms used haven’t changed for generations. The patterns, too have remained unchanged. Some styles have been produced for over a thousand years in particular villages. Contemporary designs are done out of a workshop in India. Heart is proud to be able to share the artistry of these singular makers with the world, as well as help them to keep their beautiful traditions alive while helping them support their families and communities.
