HANDMADE HARDWOOD PIECES TO TREASURE At a small, family-owned workspace in a village in southern China, what the makers treasure the most their, besides family of course, is making beautiful objects by hand. They use traditional handcrafting techniques to create gorgeous furniture and décor for the modern home and provide income for the village. Their medium? Locally sourced solid wood, crafted in the country tradition employing four-generations-old techniques. Oriental Home employs about 25 makers, and it takes up to three months for up to six makers to complete a piece. That’s how special each product is. Adding to the cachet is that they are an animal-free facility and never use plastics in their products. The company’s founder, who learned furniture making from his father, says it’s sometimes challenging to find skilled makers to keep up with the demand, and even more difficult to keep them since many young men leave the village to pursue opportunities in the big city. It’s all more reason to appreciate their exceptional work.
